Tripura


General information

Tripura is a small but fascinating state in the northeast of India. Bordered by Bangladesh, Mizoram and Assam, it is known for its lush vegetation, rich culture and diverse ethnic groups.

Location and size
Tripura is located in the northeast of India and is the smallest of the seven states in the region. It has an area of around 10,500 square kilometers and is therefore roughly the size of the German state of Hesse.

Geography
Tripura is a hilly country with an average altitude of around 150 meters. The foothills of the Himalayas lie to the north and east of the state, while the Gangetic plain extends to the south and west.

Climate
The climate in Tripura is tropical. The monsoon season lasts from June to September and brings plenty of rainfall. The average annual temperature is around 25°C.

Population
The population of Tripura is around 3.7 million people. The largest ethnic group is the Bengalis, who make up around 70% of the population. There are also numerous other ethnic groups living in Tripura, including Tripuris, Chakmas and Marmas.

Language
The official languages of Tripura are Bengali and Kokborok. Numerous other languages are also spoken in the state, including Hindi, Assamese and Manipuri.

Religion
The majority of the population of Tripura is Hindu. There is also a significant Muslim minority.

Economy
The economy of Tripura is primarily based on agriculture. The most important crops are rice, tea, sugar cane and spices. There are also several industries, including the textile industry and wood processing.

Tripura has a number of sights to offer, including:

  • The Uma Laxmi Mandir, a Hindu temple from the 17th century
  • The Neermahal, a palace from the 19th century
  • The Jagannath Mandir, a Hindu temple from the 18th century
  • Radhanagar Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in India
